


Take a step back in time and dance the night away with Throwback Variety Dance Band! Based in Tucson, AZ, Throwback is a five-piece band that specializes in playing all your favorite hits from the 1950s to present. From iconic 60s tunes to groovy 70s classics, they cover it all with style and talent.

Joe Dunlap
At 13, Joe started playing weekends at school dances with his band in the Bay Area. At 18, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he received a vast amount of exposure to a wide variety of different and exciting types of music. Joe strived to do whatever possible to gain experience from the extensive amount of skilled musicians in the Detroit area. At 26, he moved to Tucson with his wife, Deanne, and his daughter, Tammy. Over the years, Joe has had the good fortune of working with a wide range of gifted musicians.

Mike Fortier
At 15, Mike started playing guitar. By age 19, he was playing gigs in and around Providence, R.I. In 2018, Mike moved to Tucson. In 2023, he met Joe Dunlap, oddly enough, while shopping in a Fry’s grocery store. Mike joined the “Throwback Variety Dance Band” shortly after that. Mike sings lead and backup vocals and plays bass guitar in both the six-piece and quartet versions of “Throwback.” He enjoys teasing and making Bill crazy. He is also a fabulous baker, triggering weight gain throughout the band’s membership.

Michelle Ruiz
A graduate student from Tucson, Arizona, she is a passionate Latina singer and musician who has been drawn to the arts from a young age. She began her musical journey early, studying classical piano and performing recitals at festivals, church, and school events. While completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arizona and earning a minor in theatre, Michelle was a member of the honor choir, further honing her vocal skills. In addition to singing, Michelle enjoys exploring different ways of expressing herself through art, particularly by composing music, writing poetry, and experimenting with various instruments. Her versatile talent enables her to express her artistry in multiple creative ways.

Ebe Naylor
Raised in New Orleans and brought up in a musical family, Ebe became exposed to various types of music at an early age. He began his musical journey at 16. At 18, he was in his first band. Since then, he has been fortunate to be traveling the West Coast with many bands, playing various kinds of music. Ebe feels lucky to have played in both Folk and Jazz duets and R & B, R & R, Country, and Pop. He has played live on the radio and opened for many pro-level acts. Ebe moved to Tucson in 1999, playing locally with the occasional tour to Washington state.

Bill Young
Bill is a multi-instrumental musician. He can play drums, percussion, guitar, and bass. He sings lead and harmony vocals and runs sound. Bill was previously in the “Retro Rockets” and “The Kelly Bryan Band.” His musical journey started at 7, with piano lessons until 11. He played alto saxophone in 4th and 5th grades, switching to baritone sax in middle and high school. Bill learned to sing in high school, college, and church choirs and played with several bands in New York and Philadelphia during the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. In 2008, Bill moved to Tucson to marry his lovely wife, MiMi. He has been playing with drummer Joe Dunlap since 2009.
